Record Gas Prices and No More Relief Programs: How Gig Drivers Can Protect Their Pay This Fall
Gas set a September record of $4.33 a gallon, and the spring fuel relief from Uber, Lyft and DoorDash has ended. Here's what savings still exist and how to keep fuel from eating your profit.

September 2026 was the most expensive September ever at the pump. AAA says the national average for the month was $4.33 a gallon, 50 cents above the old September record from 2023, and it was still $4.41 on October 1. For drivers who use their own cars, that comes straight out of take-home pay.
The spring relief programs are over
When prices jumped in March, the big apps offered temporary help. Those programs have now ended:
- DoorDash: paid $5 to $15 a week to Dashers who drove 125 to 250+ delivery miles, plus 10% cash back on gas with the Crimson debit card. The weekly payments ended April 26 and the boosted cash back ended June 30. DoorDash said it spent about $100 million on gas relief in the first half of 2026.
- Uber: matched DoorDash's weekly payments for couriers through May 3, and gave drivers up to $1.44 a gallon in combined savings through the Uber Pro Card, Upside and Shell Fuel Rewards. Uber extended those discounts once, through June 30.
- Lyft: offered extra cash back through its Lyft Direct card and Upside through May 26.
We found no new fall relief programs as of October 6. If one appears, it will show up in your driver app first.
Know what fuel is costing you
Divide the price per gallon by your car's real-world mpg. At $4.41:
| Your car | Fuel cost per mile | Per 1,000 miles |
|---|---|---|
| 22 mpg (SUV, older sedan) | about 20 cents | about $200 |
| 30 mpg (compact sedan) | about 15 cents | about $147 |
| 50 mpg (hybrid) | about 9 cents | about $88 |
Then add up total miles, including the empty miles between trips. In a recent Benzinga report, one Virginia Beach driver made $215 gross for 221 miles in 12 hours. At 30 mpg, about $32 of that went to gas before any other cost. An Instacart batch paid $25.92 for more than 104 miles round trip. That's under 25 cents a mile, and gas alone would take more than half.
Savings you can still use
- Driver debit cards. The Uber Pro Card, Lyft Direct and DoorDash Crimson still give gas cash back, at lower everyday rates, usually tied to your tier. Check the current rate in each app.
- Cash-back apps. Upside and similar apps pay cents per gallon at participating stations. Some stack with driver card rewards.
- Station loyalty programs such as Shell Fuel Rewards, and warehouse-club stations if you have a membership.
- Price-compare apps like GasBuddy. Prices often differ by 20 to 40 cents within a few miles, but don't drive out of your way to save a dollar.
Driving habits that cut fuel cost
- Set a minimum dollars-per-mile. Many drivers decline offers under $1 per mile for delivery, or under about $1 per mile all-in for rides once you count the empty trip back. Use your own costs to pick a number.
- Stop chasing. Park in a busy spot and wait for orders instead of circling.
- Watch long trips out of town. A big fare can turn small once you count the empty drive back.
- Keep tires inflated and drive smoothly. Hard acceleration and under-inflated tires waste fuel.
- Multi-app. Running two apps cuts unpaid miles between trips.
Don't miss the tax deduction
Higher fuel prices are one reason the IRS raised the standard mileage rate to 76 cents a mile for July to December 2026. Track every business mile, including driving to your first pickup area and between trips with the app on. Our mileage rate guide explains the details.
Is it time to switch cars?
If you drive full-time in a 20-something-mpg car, a hybrid can save you $50 or more a week at today's prices. An EV can save even more if you charge at home. See our guide to driving rideshare in a Tesla for the numbers. If you drive part-time in a paid-off car, switching usually doesn't pay.
Frequently asked questions
Do Uber and Lyft fares go up with gas prices? Not automatically. In 2022 both added temporary fuel surcharges. In 2026 they used cash-back programs instead, and those have ended.
Do minimum pay laws cover gas? Some city and state minimums include a per-mile amount meant to cover car costs, but it doesn't adjust week to week with gas prices. See our state pay laws guide.
Bottom line
Assume no help is coming from the apps for now. Know your cost per mile, decline trips that don't cover it, stack the card and cash-back savings that remain, and track every mile for taxes. Run your numbers in the earnings calculator.
