Three roads into paid driving

Every driving job sits on one of three roads. They differ in how fast you can start, who pays for the vehicle, and how much you can earn over time.

Signing up for a gig app, step by step

1. Check your car against the app's rules. Rideshare needs a 4-door car within your city's age limit (often 15 years or newer). Delivery apps accept almost any car, and some accept bikes.
2. Call your insurance company. Most personal policies exclude driving for pay. Ask for a rideshare or delivery endorsement, usually $10–$30 a month.
3. Apply in 2–3 apps at once. Background checks take a few days to two weeks. Running more than one app cuts your waiting time between trips.
4. Set up mileage tracking on day one. Every business mile you log saves you money at tax time (76¢ per mile from July 2026).
5. Learn your market. Drive the busy windows first: weekday rush hours, Friday and Saturday nights, lunch and dinner for food.

This one label changes your pay, your costs, and your protections more than any other detail on a job listing.

*Interstate truck drivers are exempt from federal overtime rules, which is why trucking pay is usually per mile or per week instead of hourly overtime.

Insurance: the gap most new drivers miss

Your personal auto policy likely won't pay if you crash while working. Rideshare apps provide some coverage, but it depends on what the app shows at that moment.

• Rideshare endorsement: an add-on to your personal policy that fills period 1 and lowers deductibles. Often $10–$30 a month.
• Delivery apps: coverage is thinner. Many apps cover liability only while you are actively delivering, and coverage is excess to your own policy.
• Tell your insurer. Driving for pay without telling them can get a claim denied or your policy canceled.
• Company-vehicle jobs (UPS, DSP, trucking) are covered by the employer's commercial insurance.

Apps don't withhold taxes. Plan for them from your first week.

The mileage deduction is your biggest write-off

The IRS standard mileage rate for 2026 is 72.5¢ per mile for January–June and 76¢ per mile for July–December, after a mid-year increase. Every business mile you log, including driving to a pickup, reduces your taxable income. 10,000 miles in the second half of 2026 is a $7,600 deduction.

What you owe

• Self-employment tax: 15.3% of your net earnings (Social Security and Medicare).
• Income tax: at your normal rate on the profit.
• Quarterly estimates: if you'll owe $1,000 or more, pay in April, June, September and January to avoid penalties.
• Forms: apps send a 1099-NEC or 1099-K. All income is taxable even if you don't receive a form.

"No tax on tips"

For tax years 2025 through 2028, qualifying workers can deduct up to $25,000 of tips from federal income tax. Rideshare and delivery drivers are on the IRS list of qualifying occupations. The deduction phases out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 if married filing jointly), and tips are still subject to self-employment tax.

How to get a CDL

A Commercial Driver's License is required for trucks and buses over 26,000 lbs, vehicles carrying 16+ passengers, and hazmat loads.

1. Pass a DOT physical with a certified medical examiner and get your medical card (valid up to 2 years).
2. Get your learner's permit (CLP) by passing the written knowledge tests at your state DMV.
3. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a school listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Required since 2022 for first-time Class A and B licenses.
4. Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control (backing) and road test.
5. Clear the pre-employment drug test and Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse check, then train with a mentor driver for about 4–8 weeks at most carriers.

Hours of Service (property-carrying drivers)

• 11 hours of driving maximum after 10 hours off duty.
• 14-hour window: no driving after the 14th hour since you came on duty.
• 30-minute break after 8 hours of driving.
• 60/70-hour limit over 7 or 8 days; a 34-hour restart resets it.
• Hours are logged on an Electronic Logging Device (ELD).

Age limits

You must be 21 to drive across state lines or haul hazmat. Most states let 18–20 year olds drive within the state only.

Recent changes (2025–2026)

• English proficiency: since June 2025, drivers who can't read road signs or speak with officers in English can be placed out of service at roadside inspections.
• Non-domiciled CDLs: an FMCSA rule effective March 16, 2026 limits CDLs for non-U.S.-domiciled drivers to citizens, permanent residents and certain work-visa holders, with stricter document checks.
• Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse: since November 2024, drivers with an unresolved violation have their CDL privileges downgraded by the state until they finish return-to-duty steps.

Federal law doesn't set a minimum wage for contractors, but a growing list of places do for rideshare and delivery drivers. Rates are adjusted often; check the latest before you rely on a number.

How drivers earn more

• Run two apps at once (for example Uber + Lyft, or DoorDash + Uber Eats) and take the better offer. Pause the other app once you accept.
• Use a dollars-per-mile rule. Many delivery drivers decline offers under about $1.50–$2 per mile.
• Drive the peaks: weekday commutes, Friday and Saturday nights, rainy days, big events, and airport rushes.
• Choose a fuel-efficient car. A 45-mpg hybrid can add $2–$4 per hour over a 22-mpg SUV.
• Get endorsements. For CDL drivers, hazmat and tanker endorsements open higher-paying freight.
• Switch fleets, not companies. Dedicated and LTL jobs often pay more than OTR once you have a year of experience.
• Track every mile. The mileage deduction is often worth more than a raise.
